A Hydrogen hybrid is a car that uses an ‘on demand’ Hydrogen Generator on board to supplement the fuel, either petrol or diesel. Below you’ll learn about how the Hydrogen Generator and the car’s fuel system and engine produce and burn what’s known as HHO fuel and offer fuel savings of between 20 – 60%! Hydrogen generators are devices designed to produce hydrogen gas. In simple terms it’s a device that splits water into its 2 main constituents - hydrogen and oxygen, by using a process called electrolysis. To achieve this all you have to do is pass a direct current through water, which then results in the splitting of its two components - hydrogen and oxygen as mentioned above. Hydrogen generators in most HHO fuel kits are built in such a way that the maximum output is achieved with a very small input of energy. The cars electrical system provides this small input of energy as a direct current. Basically, what happens is a direct current is passed through opposing stainless steel plates or wire coils that are suspended in a container of water and this simple process produces hydrogen. The electrical current required to start the process is only around 2 volts, which is really very small. The car air intake (air filter) creates a vacuum which sucks off the hydrogen gas from the generator and into the combustion chamber where it mixes with your normal fuel, petrol or diesel. Post 1996 petrol engines may need a small modification to get the absolute best mpg improvement out of a Hydrogen Generator. To maximise the fuel savings on these later cars you need the O2 oxygen sensor in the exhaust systemto change its electronic signal either by mechanical means such as a simple Oxygen Sensor Spacer, (O2 spacer - we have them listed) or better still electronically by fitting an inexpensive Maf / Map Enhancer, which gives full control over the fuel used. (Map / Maf Enhancer - also listed). The O2 spacer simply pushes the sensor further back so the computer signal reads less oxygen going through the system. The Map / Maf Enhancer gives you full control to turn up or down the amount of petrol or diesel being used. This device will in fact give fuel savings even without a Hydrogen Generator fitted! Both are relatively easy to fit. A Hydrogen Generator will work fine on all diesel engines of any year and with most petrol engines without any of these mods, but with any one of them or even all of them you will get the absolute maximum mpg available on both petrol and diesel engines. Having built or bought your Hydrogen Generator you should also think about some optional items that will enhance the safety and performance of your generator. As well as the modifications mentioned above which will enhance the performance of all vehicles regardless of age or fuel type you should consider a Bubbler. It fits between the hydrogen generator and the engine, the hydrogen gas bubbles through it. There are several benefits in fitting this inexpensive device; you can see the gas bubbling through the water in the device. This would alert you to any drop in gas output which may indicate a problem with the HHO generator. It also prevents the flow of gas from transferring small amounts of water into the engine, but the most important point is it will completely eradicate any danger of flashbacks which could be potentially dangerous. Controlling the amount of power (amps) that drives your generator is a bonus and is certainly recommended for the larger higher output generators. With this device you can control the power to the hydrogen generator which in turn means less heat and lower amperage for the same gas output. It also helps to break the water down into its components more quickly. When you have fitted a Hydrogen Generator you should expect between 20% – 60% better fuel economy depending on the style of your driving, the generator fitted and any enhancements as mentioned above. As an extra bonus you will also notice an approximate 10% increase in power. You will definitely notice fewer stops at the Fuels Stations!
